Local man Joe Sullivan is a man of many talents, one being a DJ. Every year Joe puts on a free disco in the Ballybay Inn and donates the proceeds to charity. Joe lives in Lusk and to lighten the mood in these unprecedented times the bold Joe is entertaining all in his estate with a Disco being played from his balcony every night. Joe’s started on St. Patrick’s Day and such was the success he repeated it on Sunday for Mother’s Day. On Monday night last Joe held an 80’s night and plans to play every night until the Corona Virus crisis is over. Joe’s disco’s can be seen on his facebook page which are full of requests and positive comments. As Leo Varadkar says not all heroes wear capes – good man Joe – keep her lit.

Due to the outbreak of the Corona Virus there will be no Church service in Christ Church until further notice.

Every year a number of parishioners from the Tullycorbet parish visit Lourdes as part of the annual Clogher Pilgrimage. Sadly this year’s has been cancelled due to the Corona Virus pandemic.

Ballybay quiz king Stephen Duffy is offering his quiz books free of charge to anyone who would like to avail of them during these times when all the children are off school. The books are available in Smyth’s Newsagents, Bill’s Butchers, Drury’s Centra and other local shops. In response to the COVID 19 outbreak Ballybay Post Office have implemented a few changes.

If possible the Post Office would appreciate if only state pension could be collected during 8am-12pm all other business can be carried out after 12pm Saturday 8am - 12.00pm Mon - Thursday 9.00am - 5:30pm It has been agreed with DEASP to suspend the use of the signature pad to minimise contact. DEASP have indicated all payments will be double payments week commencing 23 March. In the case where a permanent agent is unable to collect their payment it is acceptable to authorise a temporary agent for the period of the COVID19 emergency measures. Both the temporary agents & emergency COVID19 payment forms available at the counter. The Post Office respectfully ask you not to bring children to the Post Office if possible, to use the hand sanitiser provided and to please keep 2m distance from others. Tullycorbet CCE tin whistle teacher Francis has an online classroom up and running and details have been given to existing pupils. There are three different levels: beginners, intermediate and advanced. Anyone who may want their children to learn Tin Whistle over the coming period of COVID-19 can contact Francis at 087 2395396.

All masses in the parish are cancelled until 29th March however the three Catholic Churches in the parish will remain open to allow people who want to pray to do so. Well here’s your opportunity!!Men on the Move is a 6-week beginners physical activity programme aimed at adult men to become more active, have fun and improve their fitness levels through twice weekly activity sessions. The programme offers men the chance to take part in structured exercise sessions to improve their fitness levels, flexibility and core strength! Ballybay Community College U19 football will play in the All Ireland final on 21st march. In order to raise funds for the final the lads are hosting a CURRY EVENING on Wednesday 18th March in the Sports Hall at the school. The evening begins at 4pm and will run until 7pm. Admission for adults is €10 and students €5.

Three St. Brigid and two Latton Ladies footballers will receive their Ulster Post Primary Schools All Stars on Friday evening in Kelly’s Inn, Ballygawley. St. Brigid’s trio Lorna Mc Guirk, Jayne Drury and Michaela Linden will be joined by Latton duo Jane Duffy and Ciara Mulligan. All five girls have come through a series of trials to make the provincial squad. Jayne drury was also named captain.

St Brigid’s LGFA Finance committee have organised a textile recycling collection day. This is a great opportunity for a Spring Clean while raising valuable funds for the local club. Defending champions Ballybay Community College booked their place in their second consecutive Masita Brother Ignatius Rice cup courtesy of a 1-7 to 2 points win over a much fancied St Farnan’s PP, Prosperous, Co. Kildare. The game was played in horrible conditions and Ballybay playing with the wind managed to lead at the break 0-5 to 0-1. Once Daragh Dempsey netted in the second half the writing was on the wall for the Kildare and Leinster champions. Ballybay will now play either Dunmore Community School or Beara Community School on Saturday 21st March.

The Community Creche has organised a 2 hour basic first aid course for parents. It will cover topics such as CPR, burns and scalds, choking, bleeding, bandaging, fractures, childhood illness including meningitis. The course will take place on 11th March from 7pm until 9pm. The AGM will take place on Thursday 19th March on the Bowling Pavilion at 8pm and all members that participated in any competitions last year are invited to attend.

Are you interested in art or sewing classes? Catherine Mc Gregor has organised a number of classes in the Sew Arty Studio (beside the Ballybay Inn). Sewing classes will take place on Tuesday’s from 10 to 11-30am and 6-30 to 8pm. Art classes are on Thursday from 10 to 11-30am and 6-30 to 8pm. Last Saturday was a very proud day for the Ballybay Community College senior football team as they won an All-Ireland title and the Edmund Ignatius Rice Cup. Massive congratulations are due to the players and management for such a wonderful achievement. There is a full match report in the sports pages. Ballybay Chamber of Commerce are one of the many groups in the town and surrounding areas who would like to congratulate the team on their amazing success. The chamber plan to have a civic reception for the team in the very near future.

Frankie Wright who spent a number of years in Ballybay and is himself a former Pearse Brothers player was so delighted with the success that he has invited the team to Lilliput Adventure Centre for an overnight on us in recognition of their amazing success.

Local man Eamon Gorman recently celebrated his 80th Birthday. Eamon donated the money he received for his Birthday to the local Lourdes Invalid Fund which this year will be sending 8 people from the parish to Lourdes. Good man Eamon and many happy returns.

Mackey Smyth, who celebrated his 70th birthday last Friday night in Lynch’s of Lisnalong and combined it with a Charity Fundraiser for local charities wishes to say a huge thank you to all those who supported the event either by attending or sending contributions, and by so doing made it such a resounding success. Thanks to Mick McCormick who provided the music and to Kathleen & Paddy for the food. Thanks also to the Northern Standard and local social media platforms for the publicity. Benefitting charities will include Ballybay Cancer Society, Five for the Fight-Cancer Research, Cystic Fibrosis and Loughmourne National School’s Autism Unit. It is gratifying to know that these great organisations will benefit as a result of your remarkable generosity. A church gate collection weekend in aid of UNICEF for The Syrian and Yemen appeal will take place on the 13th and 14th of April at all masses in the parish.

An open invitation has been issued to an open evening and talk on Freemasonry in Ballybay and surrounding areas from 1723 to 2019. This introduction to the world’s oldest fraternity and its contribution to the history of Ballybay will take place in Ballybay Masonic Hall on Friday 12th April. The evening will commence with an ‘open door’ to the Masonic Hall at 6pm with a tour of the historic building and a display of items connected with the local lodge. This will be followed by a talk at 8pm from guest speaker Eugene Markey – Provincial Archivist Province of Meath. As part of National Spring Clean week Ballybay Tidy Towns committee is organising ‘Ballybay Spring Clean’ on Saturday 13th April 2019 (please note the new date). Anyone who can spare an hour or two is asked to be in the Square at 10am. The organising committee of this year’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade were delighted with the large attendance and would like to thank all the locals who continue to turn out in big numbers to support the parade. A three- day Easter camp for 8 to 14 year olds will be held between the 16th and 18th April at Breakthrough Performance at Pearse Park Ballybay. Ballybay Pearse Brothers would like to pass on their sympathies to the Mc Cabe and Boyle families on their recent bereavements. Michael Houghton passed away suddenly in Leeds on Saturday last and is a brother of Cathy Mc Cabe, Knocknamaddy. Details of his funeral will be released in the near future. Margaret Boyle (Loch Mor Avenue) died on St. Patrick’s Day and was the mother of former player Joey Boyle. Margaret’s funeral mass was held yesterday in St. Patrick’s and she was buried in the adjoining cemetery afterwards. May both Michael and Margaret rest in peace.

CLÁR is a targeted investment programme for rural areas that aims to provide funding for small infrastructural projects in areas that experience disadvantage at Schools /Community Facilities. CLÁR 2019 includes new measures to support rural communities. The Department of Transport, Tourism & Sport has announced funding for the repair and upgrade of local or regional public roads under The Community Involvement Scheme (CIS) 2018.

Community Involvement Schemes (CIS) are joint ventures between the community and Monaghan County Council, aimed at improving the quality of public roads which are in need of repair.

A 15% percent contribution by the public is required towards the total cost of the works.

Eligible works include surface dressing, road strengthening and ancillary works.

Completed application forms are to be submitted to the Roads Section, Monaghan County Council, M- TEK II, Armagh Road, Monaghan by Friday 4th January 2019.

The annual St. Patrick’s Day parade will take place on Sunday next 17th March at 5pm. Floats, community groups and others participating in the parade should assemble at Gerry Traynor’s shop. Ballybay Pearse Brothers are having a ‘Race Night’ in Stookies Bar on Saturday next 16th March. The first race is off at 9pm. Should be a great night’s craic and everybody welcome.

Congratulations to the under 13 Indoor Soccer Team who won their first game of the competition. They beat Donaghamoyne and will soon be playing against other local teams within Co Monaghan. The team managed by Martin Sheridan and Peter Ward are Eoin Brady, Eanna Curran, Simon Du Plessis, Stephen Duffy, Jerome Lavelle, Martin Quinn, Eoin Sheridan and Sean Ward..We wish them good luck in their next match.

The Ballybay Indoor Bowling Club held their last club night of the season on Monday last when Chairperson Angela Rutledge thanked all those that competed in the various competitions during the year. We had two teams in the Monaghan Zone League but there was no change in their standings in the league. Angela lead by example when she won along with Cora Smyth and Rose Hughes, the ladies triples and now go to Shaws Bridge, Belfast on Saturday to compete in the Northern Section. The entire bowling fraternity wish them good luck and hope they come back with the silverware.

Monaghan Local Community Development Committee will be asking local communities to come up with ideas for events in their areas. Events can be centred around food, sport, the environment or health and culture.

The event is a celebration of the great spirit of community that exists across the country and an effort to help people who share communities to come together, get to know each other and deepen the sense of community in their area.

Events will take place over the May Holiday weekend of 4th to 6th May 2019. The success of this initiative will lie in having local communities come together to plan events that will work best for their area. This celebration belongs to everyone.

We will not tell communities what they should do, events will be very much driven by communities. These could include themes around sport, history, baking, anything that will help neighbours to come together.

The event is a chance for people to foster a sense of helping each other by coming together, not just on that day, but hopefully all year round. It’s the chance for everyone to get to know all members of their community, to reconnect with neighbours and have a celebration together that is open, inclusive and local.

Massive congratulations to the Community College U19 team who have reached the Rice Cup All Ireland final. On Saturday last at a rain swept Clooneen, Co. Roscommon the local lads defeated Scoil Chuimsitheach Chiarain 1-8 to 1-6. In the final which takes place on 23rd March they will play Boherbue Comprehensive School. The Parish of Tullycorbet and surrounding areas wish to acknowledge and give thanks for the years of service given by the “Ballybay Nuns” over many decades. With changes to the ownership and administration of St. Joseph’s Nursing Home, it was felt that this is an opportune time to thank the Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart for their sterling commitment. Local girl Keva Morgan is hosting a bric a brac sale and coffee morning on Saturday 16th March at 11am in Church Street Hall. Keva is raising money as part of a trip to South Africa where she will spend time teaching and volunteering. Keva would like to thank everyone who has donated already and would love to hear from anyone who has unwanted items that they are prepared to donate for her sale.

Local lady Pauline Duffy will officially take over as the librarian in Ballybay on 22nd March. Pauline has a wealth of experience having spent 17 years in the library in Castleblayney. Her many friends in Ballybay would like to wish her all the best in her new role.

Fr. Ruben of the Comboni Missionaries has written to thank the parish for allowing him to speak recently about his work and to make an appeal for funds to help with their work. The amount collected at masses in Tullycorbett and the vigil mass in Latton amounted to €2, 955. Fr. Ruben was delighted with this amount and has asked that his thanks be passed on to everyone who contributed.

The outdoor club has been invited to Fivemiletown on Saturday 27th April to play a select team in the Vincent Cup. This cup is played for each year so you can put your name on the time sheet in the Pavilion. Another date for your diaries is Monday 25th March when we hold the AGM in the club house at 8pm. Some of the committee members will be making contact with the teams that play in our competitions last year to make them aware of the dates for the coming season.

A draft map will be on display this week in all the parish churches, showing the map of the graveyard and the names listed in alphabetical order, showing the surname, first name, address, month and year of death and age at time of death together with the plot number.

Correction sheets are provided for parishioners to come forward with any local information on unmarked graves and plots where names may not be included on headstones. Also to correct any mis-spellings & errors in transcription of headstones.

Six children from Ballybay were part of the HIPHOPICAL dance group which appeared on Ireland’s Got Talent last Saturday night. Sarah Louise & Niamh Harte, Macey Mc Kenna, Kamila Grigaityte, Kaitlyn Rayburn and Grainne Smyth were part of the 37 strong dance group which brought the house down. All four judges gave them a standing ovation and followed up with very favourable comments. Clips of their amazing performance are doing the rounds on social media at the moment.

St. Brigid's Ladies GFC Club are holding their AGM meeting on Thursday 7th March at 7:30pm sharp in Ballybay Pearse Brothers Centre, we would like as many parents could they please attend.
The club are also holding a table quiz in the Pearse Brothers Centre on Saturday 9th March at 8pm sharp. A table of four is just €20 or €5 per person. There will also be a raffle on the night. Your support for the ladies of the parish would be very much appreciated.

A Community youth club will take place this Saturday at 6pm in Christ Church Hall in Ballybay for all national School age Children. There will be lots of fun games, arts and crafts. Refreshments served, and parents welcome to stay for the hour and have a cuppa.

From Friday 22nd March, Ballybay will have an increase in opening hours to the public. The new opening hours will be Monday & Thursday 2-5pm & 6-8pm and Wednesday & Friday 11am – 1.30pm & 2.30pm – 5pm; Closed on Tuesdays.

Sadly we have to report that efforts to re-establish a scout troupe in Ballybay have come to nothing. Nadine Keenan did try very hard to get scouting back into Ballybay however due to the poor response from parents the scouts will not be coming back anytime soon.

A meeting of the Ballybay-Clones Fianna Fáil Comhairle Ceanntair will take place in the Creighton Hotel,Clones on Monday evening next 4th March at 8.30pm sharp. All party members and supporters are invited to attend as issues of local and national importance are to be discussed. Local Election Candidates for the Ballybay-Clones L.E.A. Cllr.Seamus Coyle and Mike Durkan will be in attendance as will Local Oireachtas members.

Monaghan Co. Council Forward Planning Team will be running a series of Workshops after the Easter break to allow members of the public and interest groups to discuss matters relating to the Draft Monaghan County Development Plan 2019-2025 which is currently on public display up until the 25th of May 2018. The workshop locations are ; Monaghan Town , Carrickmacross, Castleblayney, Clones and Ballybay. The workshops will facilitate members of the public who have any questions or concerns in relation to the contents of the Draft Plan or want to engage in the Development Plan process at this stage.

A big thank you to the people from Ballybay and surrounding areas who donated so willingly and generously to make our Daffodil such a success.The €8053 raised so far will stay in our County to help the people in our area to get through Cancer. We couldn't have done it without you. We have a brilliant team of willing and loyal volunteers who have been helping out over the years, and this year we sent out an appeal for new Volunteers and we got a few more people to help our exsisting team out on the day. A big thank you to some volunteers who have retired after many years of helping out at all the Ballybay Daffodil Days for nearly 30 years. The Cake Sale and Coffee morning was a lovely way of meeting people and thank you to those who helped out and supported it, we are very grateful. Thanks to Pat O'Brien for the use of his premises for the coffee morning. Thanks to Ina Hagan who donated two lovely hampers. Paul Duffy and Rose Stuart were delighted to win them. We had great help from students for the Community College, who supplied lots of scones and helped out at the selling of the cakes, washing up, and serving the tea. A total of 60 volunteers was involved in some way or other and without those people, we simply couldn't have done it. These Volunteers sincerely love to give their time, energy, and enthusiasm to Daffodil Day.

This money provides services to all people who are affected by cancer in County Monaghan. Your support is always crucial to our outstanding success of Daffodil Day. Every Daffodil, keyring or other merchandise sold, supports programmes that prevent cancer, save lives from cancer and help people face cancer to cope and maintain the highest possible quality of life. The National Cancer Helpline 1800 200 700 is invaluable to people who need to talk things over and get advise.

The Presbyterian churches in Ballybay are planning an early morning gathering to celebrate the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday morning. We will meet at 7.00am at the Wetlands, Clones road, Ballybay. Good Friday is always a rather sad and sombre occasion, and rightly so, as we remember the torture and suffering that Jesus endured before He died on the cross. But early on Easter Sunday morning He rose from the dead and we meet early to celebrate and give thanks for His victory over sin and death. We invite everyone from our local community to join with us on this special morning. We will sing some well known Easter songs and our minister, Rev Dr. Gerry Clinton, will bring a short message from the Bible. We will meet outdoors (if the snow doesn’t return!) and there will be a light breakfast served in the Wetlands after our short praise service. Everyone welcome.

The parish schedule for Holy Week has been released. On Holy Thursday there will be evening mass in Ballintra and Tullycorbett at 6pm and in St. Patrick's at 8pm. The St. Patrick mass will have the washing of the feet and the Trociare offerings will be gathered at this mass. On Good Friday there will be a celebration of the Lords Passion in St. Patrick's at 3pm and 7-30pm. The Ester vigil mass will take place in St. Patrick's at 8pm on Easter Saturday night.

Big thank you to everyone who took part in the parade, to the many people who turned out to view the parade, to the people who helped out and to all our friends and neighbours who supported the parade. St Patrick's Day this year was a very cold day, plus many people were watching the Rugby. But despite all these issues the parade was yet again a huge success. Huge thanks to the local Garda, the Aughnamullen Pipe band, the Fire Brigade who not only took part but also helped with the stewarding. To Stephen Duffy, Gerry West, Peter Murnane and Therse Hamilton. Thanks also to Gary Mc Guirk and Liam Smyth who supplied the trailer for the review stand and the PA system. The winners of the best floats in order of merit were Ballybay Community Crèche, followed by Mullaghmore Equestrian centre and Stephan Mc Cann. Best window display went to Liz Parker of Stitches who arranged a window display that would do Switzers in Dublin proud. Many thanks to the local business people who contributed financially to the parade and to Monaghan Co. Council for the window display prize.
The Municipal council were represented by Pat Treanor, Seamus Coyle, Hughie Mc Elvaney and Sean Gilliland. County Mayor Kathy Bennet was unable to attend as she was in attendance at the New York parade.
This is year 32 with one year missed due to foot and mouth, many thanks again to the participants and the many people who supported the parade.

Ballybay Gospel Country Group is launching a new CD entitled ‘GOD CAN’ in 2nd Ballybay Presbyterian Church at 8pm on Wednesday 11th April. More details to follow. All proceeds from the sale of the CD will be used for missiin work.

Ballybay Chamber of Commerce would like to congratulate Ballybay Drama Society. The society recently staged ‘Professor Tim’ and packed the Pearse Brothers Centre on three consecutive nights. There is already speculation as to what the next promotion will be and many locals are looking forward to the next promotion.

With the improvement in the weather and the longer days our thoughts turn to the outdoor sports and so it is with the bowling fraternity. The Ballybay Outdoor Bowling green situated in the beautiful Town Park will open on Monday 2nd April so anyone wishing to try their hand at the game of bowls can come along as bowls and instructions will be available free of charge.
On Thursday the 22nd March the AGM of the Outdoor Bowling Club was held in the bowling pavilion. There was a good attendance of members and all matters relating to the club and its future running was discussed at length. The following Officers were elected for the coming year.

A full report on the past years happenings was delivered and the Treasurer said we were still in the black, but that we need to keep a tight reign on our expenses. It is hoped to have 14 local clubs in the league this year (similar to last season). In the full list of events we have planned will be 16 local players competing in the Border Counties League and also the Mc Guirk Shield. There will be bowling for beginners during the month of April at 7-30pm each evening. On Monday 7th May we will hold a charity all day bowls match starting at 10am. This will be a rinks competition and will be limited to 24 teams, so if you want to enter a team or make further enquiries then ring Mal Mc Skane on 087 9710652.

Local man Colin Parker has made a film entitled ‘Beal Atha Beithe – The Market Town’. In the film there is footage from the town and surrounding areas and interviews with Stephen Sherry, Rory Mc Atavie and George Montgomery. The film will be launched in the summer however you can get a sneak preview of it on the Ballybay and its People facebook page.

25th May 2018 will see the greatest changes in Data Protection legislation for decades with the implementation of the EU General Data Protection. GDPR legislation will apply to all businesses and organisations who collect and process personal data and a breech could see a monetary fine of up to E20,000,000 (or 4% of Annual Turnover whichever is the greater!). From the Sole Trader to global organisations, charities, sports clubs (and all those in between) all will feel the effects and implications of the new legislation

The Local Enterprise Office have had to put on extra events in Monaghan to cater for the significant number of Monaghan town businesses and retailers who have enrolled in GDPR seminars. They are extremely mindful of the businesses in Clones, Ballybay, Blayney and Carrick and have seminars scheduled for Carrickmacross on 5th April and in Ballybay on 25th April.

The annual Daffodil Day takes place on Friday 23rd March. Fresh daffodils along with other items will be on sale throughout the town. There will also be a coffee morning/cake sale in the premises besides Pat O Brien’s from 10am until 2pm. Hard luck to local man Graham Crawford who was on the Armagh Royal School’s rugby side which lost the Ulster Schools Cup final on Monday last. Graham’s team have had a great season, but their luck ran out in the final where they lost to Campbell College 19-13. Graham and his team mates can hold their heads high.

Many of you will not have heard of Thom Moore who died recently. He was an American singer songwriter who moved to Ireland in 1974. In 1994 he released a song called “Gorgeous & Bright”. The song makes reference to Ballybay and Lough Egish. The first verse goes:

Monaghan was frozen

Lighter hearts who’d chosen to

set out from Ballybay.

We meant to find Lough Egish

The Indoor Bowls season is coming to a conclusion for the 2017/18 season. Ballybay have just one game with Latton for the Jimmy Mc Elroy shield which is played for at the end of each season. We also participate in the Tom Mc Philips trophy which is also an end of season game in Latton.

Ballybay had a good year’s bowling with their maroon team gaining promotion to Division 1 and the white team securing promotion to Division 3. Our Chairperson Angela Rutledge had much praise for the efforts of both teams.

The Outdoor club will now be getting underway and will be opening on Monday 2nd April with bowling for beginners. As the name suggests we will entertain all comers, so if you fancy a game of bowls just turn up and instructions will be given.

The AGM of the Outdoor Bowling club will take place on Thursday 22nd March at 8pm in the Bowling Pavilion. All members are welcome to attend. As our green is open 12 years it is on the agenda to upgrade the entire green and surrounds so it’s important to attend this meeting and have your say.

This year marks the 32nd annual St. Patrick’s Day parade in Ballybay (with the exception of 2001 due to foot and mouth). The parade begins opposite Gerry Traynor’s shop at the Carrickmacross end of O Duffy Terrace. The parade will begin at 5pm. The organising committee request that all participants please be at the Carrickmacross Road prior to 4-50pm. This enables stewards and the gardai to start the parade on time.

Aughnamullen Pipe Band will lead the parade as they have done so every year to date. This year promises to be a great event with many community, business and vintage participants taking part. Among the community groups are Ballybay Community Creche who are celebrating their 10th year in operation. They have a fantastic window display next door to Pat O Briens. Also taking part are Balllybay Drama Society after last year’s success. They are now getting ready for the play Professor Tim in the Pearse Brothers Centre on 22nd, 23rd and 24th March. Watch out for a classy preview of the day during the parade.

This year there will be cash prizes of €150, €100 and €50 awarded for the best entrants. The committee are very grateful to the local shops and pubs for their kind contributions again this year.

Part of the parade activities include a window display competition for local groups and businesses. Ballybay-Clones Municipal District are awarding €100 to the best display using the Irish language. As usual an exceptional high standard is emerging as we get closer to St. Patrick’s Day. The organising committee are very grateful to Corcaghan Co-Op owners of Ballybay Mart for facilitating the parade by closing the mart earlier. We also hope to thank the Irish Rugby team for their contribution to the days events!!!
Finally, could people please put their bunting and flags out to help celebrate our Patron Saint’s Day.

An historical walk of Ballybay will take place on Friday evening 16th March commencing at 8pm. The starting point will be the entrance to Loch Mor Avenue. The walk will last about one hour and will finish at Pat O Briens. People taking part are advised to wrap up well and if possible wear some form of high vis clothing. It is hoped to be able to provide some high vis vests as well. As some interest has been expressed in the tour already it would be advisable to contact 087 7687248 in advance in order to confirm numbers.

Local man James Flanagan continues to fly the flag for Ballybay. James who hails from Loch Mor Avenue attends Dundalk IT where he is completing a media course. During last weeks poor weather James braved the wind and snow to take some video footage which he then sent to RTE. The National Broadcaster was delighted to receive the footage and it aired during news bulletins. James has since put his drone up to capture some scenes of the snow around the area and this along with other footage is available to view on Ballybay and its People facebook page. Keep up the good work James.

It’s just one week to the annual Ballybay St. Patrick Day parade. Once again it will take place in the town starting at Gerry Traynor’s at 5pm. There will be prizes for the best floats so now’s the time for local businesses, community groups and sporting organisation to get your thinking caps on. A substantial number of Chamber of Commerce €10 and €20 vouchers were sold in the run up to Christmas. The Chamber would like to thank everyone who supported their voucher scheme. It is also worth remembering that the vouchers are available all year so if you are looking for Birthday presents throughout the year why not consider a voucher which can be spent locally.

There has been great interest in local people displaying their images on the Ballybay and its People facebook page. During February lots of people contributed. The March theme will be OPEN. Remember the rules maximum four pictures per person related to the theme and off course taken locally in and around Ballybay. You don't need an expensive camera and you can even take them on your phone. If anyone has any ideas for other themes you can either post on the page or contact Dolores Maguire at 086 8340501.

Tanagh Outdoor Education and Training Centre are running a Kayak Skills Camp on the 26th-28th March from 10am-2pm daily for 9-16 year olds and a Tanagh Forest School Camp on the 4th-6th April from 10am-2pm daily for 6-11 year olds. Jamie Hughes is hosting a table quiz in aid of the Drumhowan GFC Night at the Oskars. It will be in the Ballybay Inn on Friday 9th March at 8pm. Table of 4 €40. There will be lots of prizes on the night so why not come along and bring a friend.

 A 5km fun run/walk will take place on Sunday next 11th March. The event will start at 3pm from the Pearse Brothers Centre with registration at 1-30pm. There will be an entry fee of €10 for adults, €5 for children and €20 for families.

Ballybay Social Club meets again Friday 9 March next from 11.30am in Cuan Mhuire with morning tea/coffee. Despite the poor weather the St. Patrick’s Day Parade was a great success with large numbers of spectators turning out. There were a number of winners on the day. These were as follows: Best Community Float – Ballybay Drama Group, Best Novelty Float- the Welcome Inn, Best Business Float – PQE, Latton and Best Dressed Window – Ballybay Pharmacy. The committee would like to thank the following without whom it would not be possible to have the parade – Local Garda, Rory Mc Atavie, the Aughnamullen Pipe Band, Gerry West, Stephen Duffy, Charlie Lennon (and his team from Cuan Mhuire) and Eamon Kerr (lorry for viewing stand). A massive thank you also goes to everyone who made the effort to put in a float.

There will be a table quiz on Friday 31st March in the Pearse Brothers Centre. A table of 4 will cost €40. There will be refreshments and spot prizes galore. There will also be a presentation on the night for the 2016 Championship and League winning U14 team.

Thanks to all who came to our Annual St Patricks Eve Session. A great nights entertainment was had, and photographs are now up on the Facebook page. Fleadh events: Launch of the County Fleadh will take place on Thursday 1st of June in Tullycorbet Community Centre. On Friday, a talk and piping session will be held commemorating local Ballybay piper William Clarke. Competitions will take place on Saturday in Ballybay Community College. On Sunday there will be a traditional mass featuring Ceoltoiri Drumlin. Set Dancing and Sean Nos dancing competitions will take place in Tullycorbet Community Centre, and a youth session will be held in the evening, led by County Youth Officer Cathy Kirke in Ballybay Inn, with many other sessions taking place throughout the weekend

Ballybay Social Club that meets monthly in Cuan Mhuire has been invited to Ardaghey Community Centre on Monday 27 March next. Please come along at 11.30 am to the Riverdale Hotel car park where transport will be available. This year’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade will take place tomorrow Friday 17th March. The parade will once again start at Gerry Traynor’s on the Carrickmacross Road. Monaghan County Council will be sponsoring the best dressed window competition. The winner of this will receive €100. The committee are appealing to locals to get their flags and bunting out.

Amateur Drama returns to Ballybay after many years with the setting up of a new Drama group in the town. The group started up at the beginning of the year and has been rehearsing every week since then. The cast includes a few stalwarts with experience in acting and a few newcomers to amateur drama. All have been putting in a huge effort in preparing for the performance. The play ‘Anyone Could Rob a Bank’ by Thomas Coffey is a hilarious comedy and guarantees a great night’s entertainment for the audience. With a cast that includes Michael Duffy, Stephen Duffy, Robbie Carragher, Claire Duffy, Brid Mc Cabe, Kevin Quinn, Paul Mc Cabe and John Paul Cosgrove this is a play you will just have to see. The performances will take place in the Pearse Brothers centre on Thursday 23rd, Friday 24th and Saturday 25th March. More details on the play to follow next week.

The Irish Blood Transfusion Service will be in town on Thursday 23rd March. They will hold a clinic at the Sports centre behind the Community College between 4-30pm and 8pm. Everyone welcome especially new donors.

Ballybay Pearse Brothers are holding a Club Registration Night for ALL club members; Adults, Juveniles, Players & Supporters! It is taking place in the Pearse Brothers Centre between 7 & 8pm this evening Thursday 16th of March. On the night the club will also be launching their new Online Club Shop.

Branch session will be held tonight (Thursday 16th) at 8pm. Branch members will be playing at mass in Tullycorbet on St Patricks Day, and junior members will be taking part in the Ballybay St Patricks Day parade. A number of Public workshops are going to take place over the coming weeks to allow the pubic have their say on how Co Monaghan as a whole is developed in the years 2019 -2025. Plans involving Rural development , Community Facilities, Town Centres, Transport and Infrastructure , Heritage & Landscapes , Tourism and Arts , Environmental issues , effects of Brexit and Future jobs and employment in Co Monaghan are going to be discussed. Your opinions are very important as it allows Monaghan County Council hear the opinions of all sections of the community. One of these public workshops will be held in the Wetlands centre on Friday 24th march from 6pm until 9pm. Everyone welcome.

The regular monthly social at Cuan Mhuire continues on Friday 10 march from 11.30 am onwards and is open to all-comers. The group is accepting an invitation to visit Ardaghey Social Club on Monday 27 March for lunch and a musical afternoon. The bus leaves from the Riverdale car park at 11.30am. The Ballybay indoor bowling season came to a conclusion on Monday night with a game for the Community Shield when we played Latton. This has been our usual end of season game but because of other commitments it just did not happen for the last four years so it is great to see it been played for once again. There was a full turn out of members from both clubs and all finished level on points so it came down to the scores where Ballybay came out winners by 7 shots. The presentation took place afterwards when Seamus Lennon (the Latton Captain) presented Benny Smyth, the Captain of the Ballybay team with the shield. Both captains said their few words and remembered with fondness the banter that would take place when the late Jimmy Mc Elroy and Dessie Mc Govern use to play for the shield. Our Chairperson Angela Rutledge thanked all that contributed to the night and wished all well for the Summer months at the outdoor green. Best wishes and a speedy recovery to Jackie and Vincent Rutledge and Philip Gibson who are in hospital at the moment.

With the better weather and longer days it is now time to be getting ready for the outdoor bowls in the Town Park. Despite the green being closed a lot of work and planning has been going on behind the scenes which will be revealed at our AGM on Monday 20th March starting at 8pm. All the clubs that played in our local league have been notified of the format of the league for 2017 which we hope will start on Friday 28th April and will run on Mondays and Fridays for the duration of the league.
At a recent community meeting it was decided to upgrade our green as it is now over 10 years in use. A full report on this will be given at the upcoming AGM. Our thanks is extended to Kevin Mc Nally and Monaghan County Council who done a great job in providing the extra car parking spaces and also in cutting down the trees.

The Community Games Cross Country, Mixed Distance Relay and Marathon County Finals take place on Saturday 18th of March at Tully GAA pitch, Emyvale. Registration will take place at 12pm for all events at the pitch. The XC and MDR will take place at Tully GAA pitch and the Marathon course is around Emy Lake. A reminder that these events are open to an unlimited number of competitors from each area and they do not need to be previously registered on the Online System.

On Sunday next, 12th March Latton/Bawn Centenary St.Patrick's Day Parade takes place. Assembling at St.Patrick’s Church Car park, Bawn at 3.45pm and departing at 4pm sharp. The parade will travel via Lacken Bridge to the O'Rahilly GAA Centre, Latton for 5pm. All local business's and Community groups are invited to take part as it is a great opportunity to showcase your business and its activity, so get working on that float. Last year, MWIB hosted 9 events throughout the county with a total attendance of over 330 throughout the year. This year’s Daffodil Day is on Friday 24th March - The Irish Cancer Society provide many essential services. Night Nursing is a fantastic service made available to people with cancer who are seriously ill at home. This vital support is invaluable to the person who wishes to remain at home being cared for by their family. The Irish Cancer Society provides the only night time care service for cancer patients in their own homes. Explaining why the service is so important local night nurse Catriona Murray said:" It is a privilege and honour to be with a patient and family at such a precious time. I try to bring a sense of calmness, sensitivity, kindness and understanding with caring and comfort for the patients. The relief and reassurance expressed by families in the knowledge that their loved one is comfortable is evidence of the invaluable service of Night Nursing. Daffodil Day means that we can provide this free service to cancer patients". It is so important that we raise as much money as possible in order to continue to provide and expand this service and others. Unfortunately, one in three of us will be diagnosed with cancer in our lifetime. Survival rates are on the increase due to further advancement in research. Callers to our Cancer Nurseline (1800 200 700) tell us that talking with a cancer nurse really reduced their anxiety and gave them hope about their situation.
The volunteer drivers are there to take you to and from your chemotherapy appointments, and counselling is available to you in your local area through our affiliated cancer support centres. It is known that 40% of cancers can be prevented. Working with many groups across the country, making people more aware , and giving practical supports to people helps to reduce the number of people getting cancer in the first place by early detection. Every 15minutes someone hears the words 'you have cancer Supporting Cancer research will save lives. Cancer incidence in Ireland is expected to double over the next 20 years. Hence research is needed to identify risk factors, to better understand how cancer develops, and to develop improved treatments and ultimately better outcomes for patients. All your donations we are able to support this vital work.
Ballybay Daffodil Day has being very successful in raising huge amounts of money over the last 25 years. The people of Ballybay and surrounding areas have always generously supported this worthy cause. This would not be possible without our team of Volunteers. This year we are short 10 people to help out either on the Friday or Saturday morning, so please contact me on the number below if you think you could help out for an hour or so. We hope you can donate whatever you can afford to this worthy cause, or help out in any way, either by Volunteering to stand at collection points, supplying fresh daffodils to the various collection points, or arranging with us to collect from your home. Ballybay Mental Health Association held their AGM last Friday 24 February 2017 at Cuan Mhuire. Reports were delivered from the Chairperson, Secretary and Treasurer. The Chairperson paid tribute to the committee members` work during the year. The Secretary noted that Mental Health Ireland has a new CEO. The local committee appointed for the coming year is - Chairperson Michael Mc Ginn (out-going), Secretary Sharon Carraher (out-going), Treasurer Eilish Deery (Out-going) while Michael Mc Ginnity, Gabriel Treanor, Stephen Duffy and Charlie Barker are on the committee. If anyone else would like to offer their services please just contact a committee member. A fund raising community Table Quiz is planned in the near future while the holding of a craft workshop for older people will also be explored. Pupils in sixth class at the six local primary schools have been invited to submit a short essay on the positive mental health theme: Friendship, closing date is Friday 31 March and there is €300 in prizes.

These seminars have been organized by Ballybay Charismatic Prayer Group and take place every Thursday evening until 6th April. Conference Tourism: Particular opportunities have been identified for Public sector conferences/seminars and public service away days. Hosting of such conferences/seminars at the Ballybay Wetlands Centre will provide a unique setting and an example of environmental sustainability in practice.

Competition Angling: There are 3 angling competitions held in the Ballybay area annually; 2 of these competitions are hosted in June and 1 in September. The competitions could be expanded in geographic terms so that at least some of the competition is hosted at the Ballybay Wetlands Centre.

Special Event Days: the Centre will host a range of special event days for the visitor market such as Bird Feeding, Artist in residence, Autumn Leaves-Painting workshops: Know your Water Colours.

Casual Visitor: The Centre will be marketed to the day visitor market as an eco-tourism centre and will provide an added facet to the County’s tourism product base, encouraging visitors to stay longer in the area. Day tickets will be available to visiting birdwatchers and to visiting coarse and pike anglers.

Kepak Group, an Irish based company, is one of Europe’s leading food innovators. Kepak frozen burger manufacturing site is located at Corkeeran, Ballybay. Approximately 143 people are employed at the plant and it is a major contributor to the economic development of Ballybay. The factory, although not at full capacity, is capable of producing one million burgers per day. All burgers produced in the plant are sourced from 90% of the raw materials from Kepak vertically integrated sites. Kepak Group is the only supplier of burgers exclusively in Ireland and United Kingdom to the fast-food giant Burger King. 

Kepak Ballybay is also home to the Big Als brand one of Ireland leading brands. 

Kepak also produces burgers for: Aldi UK, Aldi IRL, Musgraves, Dunnes Stores, AutoGrill, Disney, QUICK, TGI Friday, Whitbread, The Restaurant Group, Revolution, Hard Rock Café and to 1200 independent Quick Service Restaurants Nationwide.

Traceability and product integrity are of key importance and all of Kepak finished products are subject to stringent testing at various stages of production at the Plant. The manufacturing site is BRC accredited to Grade A level and is also audited and certified annually by SGS to produce 100% muscle VL specification, a pre-requisite for Steak Haché production for the European market.

As part of the Ballybay Oktober-féast held in Ballybay Town over the weekend of 9th-11th October, 2015, a tour of the Kepak factory took place on Friday, 9th October, 2015. In attendance were Karl Heinz Hierzegger from Osterhofen-Gergweis, Germany, a number of german students and members of Ballybay Chamber of Commerce and Ballybay-Clones Municipal District.  The tour began in the factory boardroom with a comprehensive presentation on the history and operations of the factory given by Gary Doyle, Kepak General Manager and Orla Sherry, Kepak Frozen Division Technical Manager. This was followed by lunch when the visitors had a chance to sample the quality burgers for themselves. It was then on to the factory floor where the visitors were given an extensive tour of the factory floor and were shown the operations of the factory from start to finish. An enjoyable day was had by all.
