ARE YOU A DUFFY – WANT A FREE DNA TEST

A US based group who are studying genealogical migration of Duffy families from Ireland directly to the USA or to the USA via the UK are offering free DNA tests. Their aim is to try and link cousins across the ocean with people in their ancestral homeland and pinpoint were their ancestors emigrated from. Given the vast number of Duffy’s in County Monaghan and advances in DNA testing it is now possible to trace a man’s Y-DNA, which is passed from father to son. It is also possible to determine if people have a common ancestor.

To qualify, the road must provide access to parcels of land, of which at least two are owned or occupied by different persons engaged in separate agricultural activities or must provide access for harvesting purposes (including turf) for two or more persons.  There must be a minimum of one occupied dwelling on the road.  These and other detailed terms and conditions and an application form are available on Monaghan County Council’s website www.monaghan.ie or by contacting:

BALLYBAY TIDY TOWNS

Ballybay Tidy Towns committee are pleased to have increased its scoring again in this year’s SuperValu Tidy Towns Competition.  The adjudicator stated in the report that "It is clear that you have made real progress in only three years" The adjudicator also stated that " he/she passed through Ballybay many times but failed to stop partly because of traffic congestion but mainly because there did not seem to be much to attract the attention, but now that he/she was allocated to judge the work of the Tidy Towns Committee and its helpers, on closer inspection this attitude is seen to have been much mistaken.  It was a revelation to read of and to see the work being undertaken - some of it in fact taking on duties more appropriate to the Local Authority and to the business sector.

The Adjudicator was impressed with many of the buildings in town and commented on all the churches stating that they were all well looked after.  The Community College was very impressive and Community Creche was an attractive structure/surroundings and safety measures are well thought out.  The Town Park with all its new features was also mentioned.  He/she mentioned the involvement of the children from the schools in litter picking.   There were lots of good comments but also lots of room for improvement.  The adjudicator made many comments on how things could be improved on and this will be looked at by the committee going forward. Thanks is due to all who helped out during the year, and the committee would like to encourage people to volunteer and help us to make more improvements for next year’s competition.

LOURDES DANCE

DOCUMENTARY FOR TG4

The latest documentary produced by Ballybay native Deaglan O Mochain (Declan Moen) is to be screened on TG4 on Tuesday 25th October. “An Radharc na Sul” (Out of Sight Out of Mind) provides an insight into how three murders committed over two days in Newtownbutler, Co. Fermanagh in October 1972 left a border community in turmoil. On Sunday 22nd October Robin Bell, a member of the UDR (Ulster Defence Regiment) was shot dead a few miles outside Newtownbutler. The following day Monday 23rd October a local man found the bodies of Michael Naan and Andrew Murray on the Naan family farm a few fields away from Robin Bells home. These gruesome murders were referred to in the press as “the Pitchfork Murders” because of the stab wounds to the bodies of both men. Local historian Clones native Brian Mc Donald who now lives in Rockcorry researched, compiled and published “the Pitchfork Murders”. In 1978 a former soldier from the Argyll and Sutherland Regiment reported to Police in England that he suspected his former colleague in the army may be the “Yorkshire Ripper” because he had witnessed him stabbing Naan and Murray in Northern Ireland six years earlier. As a result of this disclosure by a comrade four soldiers were convicted for their role in the murders. Stan Hathaway was sentenced to life imprisonment. “An Radharc na Sul” will be screened in Clones Courthouse on Friday 28th October at 8pm as part of the Clones Film Festival. Further information is available at www.clonesfilmfestival.com . Decland Moen is a son of Nancy and the late John Moen.

TOWN HELD TO RANSOM

A number of locals have been in touch with the Ballybay News Correspondent to voice their concerns that Ballybay was held to ransom last Sunday by a large gathering of individuals. It is believed that in access of 100 people mainly men gathered in the town for a bare knuckle boxing fight. This gathering resulted in the closure of most local businesses and as a result serious revenue was lost. One resident who did not want to give their name said, “The town was practically in lock down for most of the day. I counted at least 13 squad cars in the town. Pubs and shops were closed. All the talk is that the gathering was just a distraction and that the fight took place elsewhere”. Gardai speaking on Northern Sound radio confirmed that no bare knuckle boxing match took place in Ballybay but could have taken place in other locations. Another resident pointed out that the gathering left “an awful lot of rubbish behind them – 20 bags were collected in Riverdale car park after they all went”, said the Main Street resident.
